About Rolf Method
& Structural Integration

Structural Integration (SI) is a therapeutic technique that was established by Ida P. Rolf in the 1960's. Using her background in Biochemistry and Osteopathy she determined a holistic treatment to address human function, postural alignment, and structural compensation patterns that form throughout our life. This work is focused on addressing the body as a whole through the fascia, soft tissues, skeletal structure, and the nervous system to help people be more aligned in their bodies and discover ease in both posture and movement.

The Ten Series

Traditionally, Structural Integration is practiced in a series of ten sessions that range from 75-90 minutes in length. Each segment of the process is both a continuation of the previous one and an introduction to the next where the end goal is to realign the body's structure. The series is designed to unwind holding patterns and return to a structural ease and balance that is unique to each client. This is a therapeutic process and education in somatic awareness which helps a client discover the most efficient way of using his or her body, given the limitations, liabilities, and virtues of the individual.

Sessions 1-3

As a whole these sessions address the neck, chest, side of the body, feet and lower leg. The ultimate goal is to start unraveling old tissue patterns starting at a surface level in a way that gives the client ease in breath, sound support through their feet, and a lengthening throughout the body.

Sessions 4-7

Here we dive further into the "core" of the body, addressing: the pelvis, viscera (organs), abdomen, sacrum & spine, face and cranium. These sessions can often be very unveiling for individuals physically, energetically, or emotionally so it is best to schedule them when you can also find time for adequate rest and self-care.

Sessions 8-10

These sessions are focused on addressing any final areas that will help integrate the body as a whole. Some of the work may return to common trouble spots, and it is a good time to speak up about things you would like to address, or experiences you have had throughout the series. Typically people feel relaxed, energized and physically "good" through the final 3 sessions as the body begins to settle the previous bodywork.

Post 10 Series & Single Sessions

Following a 10 Series the body often continues changing and integrating for many months. It is recommended to take some space from sessions and allow your body to settle into new posture and movement pattern. Since this is a holistic approach, it is also ideal to go through a 10 series before seeking single session work. However, depending on the complaint, individual sessions may be able to address specific concerns and ease pain in the case of trauma or injury.

Therapeutic Movement Sessions

Movement sessions are often considered the link between bodywork and and real life. These sessions help coach you through your daily routines and movement patterns from sitting, sleeping, walking, working, and other lifestyle activities. Movement sessions can also be tailored to your specific interests and hobbies if you are looking to improve your athletic goals, working habits, or explore pain-free movement. Some movement work can be tied into a standard structural session. However, for more in-depth guidance it is recommended to schedule an individual movement session.
